Salford University Rises 25 Places in University Guide

In the last few weeks The Guardian University Guide has been published, covering UK universities for students starting in 2013.

 

A notable rising star is the University of Salford, which has risen 25 places from 109 to 84 in this year's guide, the fourth biggest rise across all UK universities.

 

This builds upon the university's performance in April's Complete University Guide 2013, when the university moved up from 97 to 78, a jump of 19 places.

 

Vice Chancellor Martin Hall said: "This result reflects the commitment and hard work of our teachers and our professional and administrative teams, as well as our students' determination to use their time at university to best advantage."

 

Particularly notable within the tables was Computer Science, which rose 65 places from 103 to 38. This follows the award of a Gold Star from the NUS student survey in 2011/12.

 

Rob Aspin, Head of Computer Science, says that aligning courses more with industry jobs and better engagement with students have been the keys to success. The department is an enthusiastic user of social media to communicate with students and share information. "Students don't just let off steam online," he says. Their opinions are acted on. "We're involving students in decision making, around course changes, for instance and we feed back to them.
