Bradford University's re:centre - The World's Most Sustainable Building

The University of Bradford hosts the annual conference for the Sustainable Building Association.

Bradford University's new re:centre is believed to be one of the world's most sustainable buildings was the centre piece of the conference, with tours conducted by Farrell and Clark architects of Leeds, who were part of the team that designed the building.

 

The university's estates manager, Russell Smith, said, "The university is proud to welcome the AECB to Bradford. It is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our sustainable estate, which is the product of ten years of dedicated team work by all in the departments of estates and facilities."

 

The re:centre is a new research facility, located at the centre of the University of Bradford City Campus, offering three areas of activity:

  • Business - a base for innovative business start ups
  • Research - world class research facilities, with access to 10 research centres and 100+ academic experts
  • Enterprise & Innovation - in house team to provide advice and support to develop proposals into a structured business idea, supporting innovation within an inspirational environment

The re:centre is financially supported by the European Union, with £2.7million of investment from the European Regional Development Fund as part of Europe’s support for local economic development, also with funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the University of Bradford.

The Appleton Point student development is situated just 1 mile from the University of Bradford's city campus where the re:centre is located and will be finished to a high specification to blend in with the new buildings in the area.

 

The development offers students self-contained studio apartments, with en-suite shower room and kitchenette, with fantastic study facilities on the ground floor, including two study rooms and an I.T. suite, with additional leisure facilities to include a television and games room and a cinema room.

 

Work on-site commenced in June and clearing has now been completed; piling works for the building's foundations commenced during the first week of July with completion on-target for August 2014.
