Russell Group institutions to enter the clearing process for the first time this August after a change in admission rules in 2012.

The 24 leading research institutes that form the Russell Group have not previously entered the clearing process, as all places were all typically filled when A-levels results were released.

New rules introduced in 2012 left some Russell Group institutions with unfilled spaces, therefore several well-known universities, including the University of Sheffield have decided to make spaces available for the 2013/14 academic year through clearing.

Sheffield Student Accommodation Investment

The University of Sheffield is running a clearing advertising campaign to attract clearing applications, including advertising on social media and on billboards, with students able to pre-register their interest for clearing places 10 days before A-level results are released.

The University of Sheffield's Head of Admissions, Alan Carlile said, "While clearing has been seen negatively in the past, perceptions are changing. There will be people who applied late, changed their minds about what they wanted to study, or achieved better grades than expected, so we can continue to look at recruiting high quality students in August, which we think is a really good opportunity." The university hopes to recruit additional students through "adjustment" where students who achieved better results can trade their existing place for one on a better course or institution.
