Posted: 13 August 2015

As students across the UK discover their A-level results this morning, UCAS has revealed that a record number of students have earned university places for this coming academic year.

According to the university admissions service, there has been a 3% increase on the number of places offered compared to last year’s results day, with 409,000 places confirmed this morning.

Within the new student population, UCAS has highlighted a number of changes in the demographic makeup of the UK’s new students. Initial figures demonstrate that there has been a 5% increase in the number of places offered to 18 year old students, whilst there has been a significantly smaller rise amongst the older age groups.

European Union and International student numbers have also increased, with the enduring appeal of the UK’s higher education system continuing to attract students from around the world.

This year has also marked the first year that universities can offer an unrestricted number of places to potential students. Following last year’s relaxing of the threshold, the 2015/16 academic year will see more places go to students than ever before, with universities offered full control of the number of places that they are willing to offer.

This means that the number of students in attendance at the start of term is likely to increase as the Clearing process gets underway this morning, with numbers expected to rise above 500,000 for the second consecutive year.

Shortage UK Student Accommodation - Asset Class Requires More Investment

With the new academic year due to start in the next couple of weeks and a larger number of students than ever before entering the UK’s ‘structurally undersupplied’ student accommodation market, now is an excellent time to invest in student developments that are operational and nearing completion for occupation this September.

Offering 10% NET rental return contractually assured for 5 years, Holmes Street in Burnley will be the growing university town’s first purpose built student accommodation development. Scheduled for completion in September, self-contained studios at Holmes Street are priced from £40,670.

Located in the WhatUni Student City of the Year 2014, The Glass Works in Newcastle is an excellent addition to one of the UK’s largest university cities. Available to purchase for £65,000 and offering a NET rental return of up to 9%, this modern student development is scheduled to complete construction this month and has just 4 units remaining. Therefore, we advise interested purchasers to act promptly to benefit from this excellent investment.

Award winning, operational development Leighton Hall was ranked the #1 student accommodation in the buoyant university town of Preston by Hallbookers users. Located just 0.1 miles from the heart of the University of Central Lancashire campus, with studio apartments available for £74,000 and en-suite rooms at £41,640, this is an excellent opportunity to invest in a popular, operational development for an immediate NET rental return of 7%.
