The Turks and Caicos islands, despite the international recession, have remained strong as a tourist destination. Figures from the Turks and Caicos Islands tourist board show a 12.8% increase in long stay and cruise arrivals from 2008 figures. There is anticipation that 2010 will be a strong tourism year, with an increase in tourist arrivals, additional flights to the islands and approval for the expansion of the Providenciales International Airport. The 2009 statistics also show that the top markets for tourists were the USA, Canada and the major European markets; the islands have become more accessible to North American travellers, as Westjet, Jet Blue and US Air have increased flight services. US air have also scheduled addition flights from Philadelphia, Boston and Charlotte and Westjet have commenced twice weekly flights from Toronto. There are also direct flights from the UK, including Virgin Atlantic.

The Turks and Caicos consist of 40 cays and islands, of which only 6 are inhabited. The main tourist area is Providenciales, with the areas of North and Middle Caicos growing in popularity. Most of the islands are accessible by air from Provo in about 10-25 minutes but there are also regular ferries from North to Middle Caicos. North and Middle Caicos enjoy the best of the environment with lush green woodlands and stunning beaches; North Caicos is also home to plantation ruins, including the highly regarded Wades’ Green, and the cottage and Flamingo Pond, which supports a vast diversity of bird and plant life.

The island is regarded as an up and coming resort destination; Pine Cay and Parrot Cay are next to North Caicos and are privately owned islands, which boast the exclusive resorts of the Meridian Club and the Parrot Cay Resort.

The Turks and Caicos is a British overseas territory, enjoying one of the more dynamic economies in the West Indies; its historical industries have recently been replaced with Tourism and Offshore finance. The low lying islands and cays are home to the world’s only conch farm with the molluscs and lobsters being the country’s main exports.

The Turks and Caicos offer a number of tax advantages to those investing in the region. There is no income, estate, corporate or real estate tax and there is a stable government in place, with the legal system being based on English Common law. The currency used is US dollars and the country is English speaking; the islands also offer a full range of international trust services. There are a number of licensed entities that carry out banking business, including five that carry out domestic and international services from the islands. The Financial Services Commission(FSC) embodies, in a single agency, all regulatory aspects of the financial services industry. The FSC also introduced Dealers Legislation which provides for persons to be licensed as a fund manager, investment dealer or investment adviser.
