An additional 19,000 students have applied to university this year compared to 2012 according to the Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).

UCAS Report Student Applications Increase 2013

Applications to universities in the UK have increased to 637,456, a 3.1% year-on-year increase.

There was an overall increase in applications of 2.7% from the UK; 3% from England; 6% from Northern Ireland; 1% from Scotland and 4.3% from EU countries. These figures are extremely promising, despite tuition fees trebling to £9,000.

A spokeswoman from the Department of Business Innovation & Skills commented that the figures were "encouraging" and "show the desire to study at university is as strong as ever. Higher education is a fantastic long-term investment, and one of the best routes to a rewarding career."

"The rise in applications shows potential students understand how the new student finance system works. Students do not have to pay fees upfront, there is more financial support for poorer families and loan repayments are lower once graduates are in well-paid work"

Applications from overseas students increased by a massive 6%, which is no surprise as the tuition fees charged in the UK are still competitive in the global market, when compared with other countries such as the USA and Australia where tuition fees are up to three times higher than those charged in the UK.
